Michigan State Police have arrested a woman who allegedly shoved a 10-year-old's face into a glass cookie display case and then walked away laughing.
The bizarre incident happened last week at Somerset Mall in Troy.
Troy Police Lt. Josh Jones said the girl was with a group of friends and her guardian when she was “forced face-first into a display shelf” at Ms. Fields Cookie Shop.
The woman who attacked the girl reportedly walked away laughing.
“The person started laughing as if it was a big joke and then walked away into the mall,” Jones continued.
Police described the attack as “unprovoked and without apparent reason.”
The girl's guardian contacted mall security and used surveillance video to try to identify the perpetrator.
The woman returned to the mall the next day to return the item to the store, and allegedly erroneously cooperated with the investigation. Security officials and Troy police said they recognized her as the same woman who attacked the girl and she was arrested.
Police later identified the woman as Leanna Valentine, 25, of Detroit.
Valentine was charged with a misdemeanor count of simple assault.she was released A $25,000 personal bond was imposed and he was ordered to be connected to a GPS tether. If she is convicted, she faces up to a $500 fine and/or 93 days in jail.
WJBK-TV said it made multiple attempts to reach Valentine for comment, but she did not respond. She is next scheduled to appear in court on January 30th.
The 10-year-old girl was not seriously injured, just stunned.
“When I started crying, she turned around, looked at me and started laughing, then put her mask on and ran away,” the girl said. interview on WBK-TV.
People will also be prohibited from entering the mall on Valentine's Day.
