Woman’s body found after California plane crashes not far from local airport

A woman's body was found in waters off the coast of California on Monday, a day after a single-engine plane crashed nearby, authorities said.

The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office said a fisherman found a body related to Sunday evening's crash in Half Moon Bay, near San Francisco.

Fox San Francisco reported that the woman's identity has not been determined. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration said another person was on board the Cozy Mark IV, a four-seater light aircraft built from a kit.

Early Monday, the U.S. Coast Guard suspended its search for aircraft and survivors.

“The decision to discontinue a search operation is never an easy one to make, and we extend our deepest sympathies to the families involved in this incident,” Ian McGoohan, operations unit commander at the San Francisco District Command Center, said in a statement. Stated.

The crash was reported by a 911 caller just after 7 p.m. Sunday, and the plane was in distress, flying erratically and descending toward the ocean near Half Moon Bay, San Mateo Sheriff's Office said. There was a report that it appeared to be the case. Philip Hallworth.

Coast Guard divers were called in and a Sheriff's Office drone was sent out to search for the plane. At about 8:30 p.m., Hallworth said, drone video footage showed the small plane upside down near Ross Cove, about 25 miles (40 kilometers) south of San Francisco.

Hallworth said the plane departed from the East Bay, but declined to say which airport it took off from.

The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.
