Somali Referee Denied Entry to U.S. Ahead of World Cup
A prominent Somali referee, set to officiate matches at the World Cup, has been prevented from entering the United States amid allegations of connections to a terrorist group.
Omar Abdulkadir Altan, 33, faced an 11-hour interrogation by border officials at Miami International Airport on Saturday. Following the questioning, he was placed in solitary confinement and subsequently deported. Reports indicate he was barred due to “reviewing concerns” linked to his affiliations. U.S. officials later announced his suspension citing associations with suspected terrorist organization members.
Upon arrival in Florida, he was probed about the political situation in Somalia and the terrorist group al-Shabab, which, as noted by U.S. Africa Command, poses significant threats to U.S. interests in East Africa.
Interestingly, Altan’s name closely resembles that of an individual connected to a U.S.-sanctioned terrorist organization. Although he denied ever meeting anyone from that group, the association seems to have raised red flags.
Andrew Giuliani, director of the White House FIFA Task Force, emphasized there were valid reasons for Altan’s exclusion, supporting the Customs and Border Protection’s decision. He remarked on the importance of ensuring that those who associate with harmful individuals are not permitted entry into the country.
Previously, former President Trump instituted a comprehensive ban on Somali nationals entering the U.S., with Somalia classified as a “terrorist safe haven” where nefarious activities are planned.
Despite providing proof of FIFA accreditation, visa, and refereeing experience, Altan was directed to a flight to Istanbul. He expressed frustration, stating that he had the proper documentation and hinted at broader issues affecting individuals from his country.
Following his exclusion from the tournament — which will take place across the U.S., Mexico, and Canada — Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire conveyed disappointment over Altan’s situation, highlighting the aspirations he represents for Somali and African youth.
Altan has been recognized by FIFA since 2018 and has officiated at significant African tournaments. While FIFA president Gianni Infantino has remained silent on this specific case, he previously asserted that everyone is welcomed at the upcoming World Cup.
