Concerns about a potential drone attack from Iran prompted the United States to relocate a squadron of B-1 bombers from a base in the UK over the weekend, according to various reports.
The alleged plot was reportedly orchestrated by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and intended to target US aircraft and potentially harm American personnel stationed at RAF Fairford, located roughly 90 miles west of London, as noted by the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times.
US officials characterized the proposed attack as “complex” and involving multiple strategies.
Some experts believe this threat may have been influenced by Ukraine’s drone strikes against Russian air bases last year, particularly those targeting bombers capable of carrying nuclear weapons.
During the June 2025 operation, known as Operation Spider Web, Ukraine employed drones concealed in sheds and transported by semi-trucks to conduct strikes on five different Russian airbases.
Meanwhile, the relocation of 12 B-1 bombers back to the US took place shortly after British authorities halted a separate terror plot aimed at RAF Fairford.
Five British nationals were reportedly planning a bombing attack with a van against the airfield, as per police findings.
UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham indicated there were “strong indications” that the Iranian government may have been involved in the initial plot, which seemed focused on the Fairford base where American bombers are stationed.
On Monday, Vice President JD Vance explained that the decision to withdraw the bombers was made “out of an abundance of caution.”
Vance further stated, “We do feel with some confidence that the Iranians are trying to do what the Iranian state has done for 49 years, which is engage in acts of terrorism against the United States and against a lot of other people as well. We are being extremely cautious.”
President Trump echoed these sentiments, mentioning that the US had obtained intelligence suggesting that the base was a target for Iran. “We had an idea that there might be a threat, so why would I leave them there?” he remarked to reporters.
