Would-be carjacker targets Supreme Court Justice Sotomayor security detail officer, suspect shot

On Friday in Washington, DC, an attempted carjacker was shot dead after pointing a gun at federal marshals guarding Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s home near her residence.

According to a criminal complaint filed by the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Police Department, around 1:15 a.m., two U.S. deputy marshals were on patrol in the 2100 block of 11th Avenue NW when 18-year-old suspect Kentrell Flowers exited a silver minivan and approached the deputy’s unidentified vehicle.

Police said Flowers pointed a handgun at a deputy through the driver’s side window in an apparent attempt to take the vehicle.

According to a police criminal complaint, the deputy pulled his service gun and fired about four times at Flowers through the window, and a second deputy in a different vehicle responded and also fired his service gun.

The U.S. Marshals Service confirmed to Fox News that the deputy involved in the shooting was assigned to the unit guarding the residence of a U.S. Supreme Court justice, but said it could not discuss details of the guard duties.

There is no evidence that Justice Sotomayor was at home at the time or in any danger.

Flowers was shot in the mouth and taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries..

Authorities recovered a .40-caliber Smith & Wesson pistol loaded with eight .40-caliber bullets in a 13-round magazine, according to the criminal complaint.

Flowers was arrested at the hospital and is charged with armed vehicle robbery, possession of an unlicensed handgun and possession of a large-capacity ammunition loading device.

According to public police data, 258 carjackings have been reported in Washington, D.C., so far this year. Statistics show that 71% of these crimes involved a gun.

The data shows that carjacking crimes are down 46% so far this year compared to the same period last year.

Several high-profile carjackings and attempted vehicle break-ins have been reported in the past nine months.

In January, former Trump administration official Mike Gill was shot during a carjacking in Washington, DC, and later died from his injuries.

In November, a U.S. Secret Service agent assigned to protect President Biden’s granddaughter, Naomi, opened fire on a suspect in an attempted car burglary in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, D.C. The Secret Service said at the time that there was no threat to the person being protected.

A month earlier, Democratic Rep. Henry Cuellar of Texas had his car stolen near the Capitol by three armed assailants who stole the lawmaker’s car but did not physically harm him.
