Wunmi Mosaku on Awards Season Amidst Tragedy

Wunmi Mosaku, the Oscar-nominated actress known for her role in “Sinners,” has shared her mixed feelings about the recent awards season. She expressed that celebrating her first nomination feels complex and overshadowed by the tragic deaths of Alex Preti and Renee Good, who were shot by federal agents in Minnesota.

In an interview with The Times of London, Mosaku elaborated, “I couldn’t celebrate because of what’s going on right now with the murders of Renee Good and Alex Preti by ICE agents in Minnesota.” This incident has sparked significant protests across the U.S. and has drawn criticism from various figures in Hollywood.

Mosaku also mentioned the case of Liam Ramos, a five-year-old boy who was detained alongside his father. When authorities attempted to take them, the father left the child behind, which she described as “the kidnapping of a 5-year-old boy.” She reflected on the difficulty of reconciling the joy of her nomination with the weight of current events. “It feels beautiful and yet so dark and heavy,” she noted, calling her feelings “truly dystopian.”

The actress questioned how one could simply celebrate or even enjoy life’s little moments after such tragic incidents, saying, “How can I go out and buy a drink and enjoy the moment?”

Her film “Sinners” received an impressive 16 Oscar nominations, a record for the Academy. Mosaku’s performance as Annie in the thriller set during the Jim Crow era earned her a nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

Interestingly, she reflected on how people around her seem to cope differently. Her husband, for instance, wasn’t as shocked by the news, leading her to ponder, “How do people go to crowded places when something like this just happened?” She expressed a desire to retreat from the world, feeling the situation was far from normal.

This ongoing national conversation around immigration enforcement has resonated deeply, with many in the entertainment industry voicing their concerns. During various award ceremonies, celebrities like Mark Ruffalo and Billie Eilish were seen actively denouncing ICE’s policies.

Despite the weight of these events, Mosaku continues to navigate her own complex feelings as she balances personal achievements with broader societal issues.
