Windham Clark recently shared that he and Baker Mayfield had a disagreement in the past over a romantic situation.
While guesting on Barstool Sports’ “Pardon My Take” podcast, Clark, who just clinched the 2026 U.S. Open, was prompted about a post from December 3, 2016, where he expressed dislike for Mayfield.
“I’m not sure if I should divulge this,” Clark began, hesitating. “But, sure, I’ll share. I honestly don’t care what people think anymore. It’s not too scandalous. My PR team prepared me for many things, but this wasn’t one of them.”
“My then-girlfriend left me for Baker Mayfield. But, here’s the twist… I’m kind of a fan of Baker now. I consider him a good guy.”
“Initially, it’s easy to think, ‘That guy’s the worst.’ But, really, it’s not great. I wasn’t a fan of Baker, but that’s the background,” he added.
He didn’t disclose who his ex-girlfriend was.
Mayfield and his wife, Emily, tied the knot in 2019, getting engaged just six months after meeting through a mutual friend in 2017.
In 2016, Clark began his golf career at the University of Oregon but switched schools after three years at Oklahoma State. During that same period, Mayfield emerged as a standout quarterback at Oklahoma, eventually winning the Heisman Trophy.
Clark, a two-time U.S. Open champion, recently showcased his relationship with girlfriend Emily Tanner at the 2026 Masters, where she served as his caddy for the par-3 contest in April.
Clark secured a 4-under-par score at Shinnecock, winning the U.S. Open in a dramatic finish. Despite facing harsh jeers during the final round, he edged out Sam Burns by a single stroke to capture the title.
After his victory, Clark expressed an awareness of past mistakes, noting, “I’ve done things I regret. I’ve apologized numerous times, and I still feel remorse. I hope over time, I can win everyone back.”
Previously, Clark faced a suspension from Oakmont in Plum, Pennsylvania, for damaging locker room facilities during the 2025 U.S. Open. He missed the cut by just one stroke and reacted poorly, damaging some lockers in frustration.
After publicly apologizing, paying reparations, donating to a charity, and completing an anger management program, the 32-year-old was reinstated.
