Impressive Play from Yankees’ Pitcher

Who would have thought that pitchers could be so athletic? New York Yankees relief pitcher Fernando Cruz certainly proved that point during an exciting moment in the eighth inning of their recent 3-2 victory against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field.

With the Yankees ahead 2-0 and the Rangers challenging in the bottom of the eighth, Joc Pederson, hitting fourth, tried to catch Cruz off guard with a bunt.

Cruz, quick on his feet, charged off the mound, executing a smooth slide to snag the ball. He turned his slide towards third base, delivering a throw that was, well, quite impressive—almost as if he were pitching from an unusual angle.

Yankees third baseman Ryan McMahon was ready, capturing Cruz’s throw on the hop. The throw narrowly secured an out against the Rangers’ third baseman, Josh Jung, a pivotal play in the game.

It’s interesting to note that Cruz wasn’t just an outfielder before he became a pitcher; he has a background that includes playing infield. This bunt play allowed him to display that versatility, perhaps in a way that surprised even himself.

Aaron Judge, the Yankees’ star player, playfully joked about Cruz’s past as an infielder. “I think we can take his word for it now,” Judge remarked with a grin. “But we need to see more performances like that. For now, I’m just focused on him pitching well.”

While Cruz’s next two outs weren’t as dramatic, they were significant nonetheless. He struck out Jake Berger and Ezequiel Duran, closing out the inning effectively.

In the ninth inning, Judge added a solo home run, bringing the Yankees to a 3-0 lead and tying for the MLB lead with 12 home runs this season.

Despite the Rangers threatening with two runs in the bottom of the ninth, Judge’s homer ultimately proved to be the winning run. Yankees closer David Bednar managed to secure the save after inducing a ground ball from Corey Seager, ending the game with a double play.

With this win, the Yankees now hold a record of 20 wins and 10 losses, the best in the American League. They are set to face the Rangers again on Wednesday, aiming for a clean series victory.
