Yankees squander Gerrit Cole's impressive comeback in defeat against Rays

Despite a strong return from Gerrit Cole, the Yankees fell to the Rays 4-2 in the Bronx, marking their third consecutive loss and pushing them 5.5 games behind Tampa Bay.

This was Cole’s first game back after recovering from Tommy John surgery, and he surprisingly delivered six scoreless innings but received little support from the Yankees’ lineup and a faltering bullpen.

The Yankees, facing off against the league’s top team who have now won five straight, continued their struggle at the plate—scoring once in the previous two games combined.

After just 72 pitches, Cole exited the game, turning things over to Brent Headrick. The Rays managed to navigate the first inning without conceding runs, and a solo home run from Austin Wells briefly put the Yankees ahead.

Unfortunately, the tide turned in the eighth inning when Tim Hill allowed four runs—three of which were earned—without securing an out. The downfall began with an error from Jose Caballero that set off a chain reaction for the Rays.

Junior Caminero and Jonathan Aranda helped the Rays tie the game, and after an intentional walk to Yandy Diaz, Richie Palacios’s chopper deflected off Caballero, giving the Rays a two-run lead. A sacrifice fly increased the deficit to 4-1.

The Yankees’ lineup, previously stagnant, saw some chances but couldn’t capitalize. Trent Grisham recorded a double early, but subsequent batters couldn’t bring him home.

Though Wells managed a run with a home run, the Yankees struggled to rally. In the bottom of the eighth, they finally got on the board again when Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a triple, cutting the score to 4-2.

Wells walked in the ninth and advanced, but Aaron Judge’s fly ball was caught right near the warning track, sealing the game for the Rays.

Nonetheless, Cole’s return was a silver lining for the Yankees. Boone expressed optimism about having their ace back, noting how critical this is to their performance moving forward.

Cole, showing skill reminiscent of his early days with the Yankees, allowed just two hits and three walks, exhibiting promise for the team’s future, especially as they battle through a rough patch.

He was originally slated for another minor league rehab start, but seriously showed he was ready to compete at the major league level. After an initial walk, he impressively retired the next ten batters until a single broke the streak.
