Attempted Takeover of Bay Bridge Thwarted by Authorities

A significant “takeover” of the Bay Bridge was successfully halted by California law enforcement after a group of reckless cyclists attempted to disrupt one of the state’s busiest routes.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP), along with the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD), acted promptly on March 28 upon identifying these cyclists as they drove erratically through the city streets. They managed to intercept the group before they even reached the bridge.

Authorities tracked the cyclists in real time, observing them as they headed towards the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, even noting when they entered the Harrison Street exit ramp, going the wrong way into oncoming traffic.

Police were already positioned there, prepared for their arrival.

Video from the CHP shows a police helicopter monitoring the situation as officers moved in to block access to the bridge. This preemptive response was based on similar past incidents where groups had gained access to the bridge from city streets.

A spokesperson for the CHP noted, “The group was seen driving through the city. There have been similar incidents in the past that resulted in the group driving onto the bridge.” They also highlighted how continued communication and strategic surveillance led to the group’s interception before they could gain entry.

In total, 85 individuals were arrested on charges of illegally riding bicycles on highways, although all were released at the scene, and their bicycles were seized.

Officials stated that these bicycles would be checked against a stolen goods database, with the possibility of further charges if they were found to be stolen. Interestingly, reports suggested that thefts are uncommon in such incidents, as participants generally take pride in their bikes, likening their actions to those seen at sideshows.

Concerns were raised regarding the dangerous behaviors exhibited by the group prior to the incident. Riders were seen swerving off roadways and directly into the path of moving vehicles, with some even intentionally driving into oncoming traffic.

The CHP warned that such actions were “unacceptable,” emphasizing that the danger posed to both the cyclists and drivers would intensify on the highway due to higher speeds increasing the risk of serious injuries.

A spokesperson remarked that, “During the entire incident, riders were seen riding directly into moving vehicles, entering and exiting roadways, and coming dangerously close to pedestrians.”

Referring to the younger participants, with the youngest being just 9 years old, CHP Captain Tim McCollister stated, “What we saw yesterday was no harmless fun. This is not a place for games or dangerous activities.”

With safety as their main concern, McCollister reiterated that the department’s focus is to prevent such incidents from escalating to a tragedy.

CHP Golden Gate Division Chief Steve Ramos commended the joint effort, noting that officers prevented what could have been chaos on the highway. Authorities reflected that the group could have caused significant danger if they had been allowed to reach the bridge.
