He reflected on Michelle Obama’s infamous 2008 speech, during which she insisted, “We’ll have to change the conversation. We’ll have to change our traditions, our history.”
After a decade and a half, it is clear that uprooting traditions will result in division, displacement and obstacles.
Tradition is “deeply human” and states that it “marks important moments in our lives” and “helps organize things in our minds.”
Traditionally based Catholicism can restore the emptiness adopted by our current culture.
“Catholic rituals – the Eucharist or Confession – raise this instinct, and this need is sacred, so it’s not just a daily thing. It’s a bridge to meaning,” says Glenn. “That’s important because when you have meaning and there’s a storm in your life, it gives you structure and doesn’t feel like the storm will just wipe you out completely.”
Modern worship does not seem to offer the same stability as traditional worship. The post states that “Gen Z longs for clarity and certainty,” and therefore “rejects loose alternatives to modern worship.”
“Why? Modern worship says you can believe anything. There are no real rules,” says Glenn.
The problem is that such progressive doctrines lack material, something that the human soul is designed for thirst. Rituals and traditions “can build communities and provide solutions like congregations sing together together or a nearby block party,” says Glenn.
“We now live in a world of screens and rushes,” he explains. But rituals and traditions “slow you down and let you introduce you in that moment.”
“They’re not about rules, they’re all about meaning. if You do it right. This is not about recognizing one faith more than another. This is about realizing what the ritual does for us. ”
