Google Removes YouTube Channels for Propaganda

On Monday, Google announced that it has taken down nearly 11,000 YouTube channels due to their involvement in spreading propaganda. About 7,700 of these channels were associated with China, while roughly 2,000 were linked to Russia.

According to Google’s Threat Analysis Group (TAG), the channels from China were distributing content in English and Mandarin. This content typically promoted Chinese interests, praised leader Xi Jinping, and criticized the U.S. stance on global issues. Interestingly, some of these channels were also quite harsh towards the Philippines, particularly regarding maritime disputes with China.

As for the Russian channels, they reportedly utilized various languages to denounce Western governments, NATO, and Ukraine. Additionally, some Russian channels shared pro-China and pro-Iran messages.

TAG’s quarterly report also indicated the closure of YouTube channels from other countries, including Turkey, Romania, Iran, Ghana, Azerbaijan, and Israel.

The 43 channels linked to Turkey were noted for disseminating Turkish-language content that supported the Victory Party, known for its nationalistic views and opposition to the Turkish government’s refugee policies. They also criticize efforts to negotiate with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

Umit Ozdag, a prominent figure from the Victory Party, made headlines when he was arrested in January for allegedly insulting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and inciting hatred against immigrants.

TAG mentioned that the 12 channels from Romania “shared Romanian content in favor of certain political parties,” though it didn’t specify which parties were involved.

Meanwhile, the impact from Ghana seemed to stem from a single Google Ads account associated with a domain that was barred from Google News visibility. TAG identified this as a digital marketing effort to promote candidates in the Ghanaian presidential election, similar to campaigns noticed by Meta and OpenAI.

Azerbaijan’s influence operations reportedly spanned over 1,000 YouTube channels critical of Armenia and supporters of the Azerbaijani government. TAG noted that it had detected and shut down numerous channels each month in the second quarter of 2025.

The Iranian channels included 12 that supported the Iranian government and Palestine, sharing content in Arabic that criticized Israel.

TAG reported shutting down four YouTube channels linked to Israel in June, which were sharing pro-Israel content in various languages while criticizing Palestine. In the first quarter alone, TAG had removed more than 23,000 accounts, aligning with their expectations for ongoing monitoring and action.
