Zach Bryan Defends Controversial Song “Bad News”
Country artist Zach Bryan took to social media on Tuesday to address the criticism surrounding his song “Bad News.” The track has drawn significant backlash, particularly for its lyrics that seemingly critique policies associated with Trump. Notably, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem labeled the song as “disrespectful” to the nation.
White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson further accused Bryan of wanting to “Open the Gates to criminal illegal aliens,” a comment that appears to have prompted his detailed response.
In his Instagram Story, Bryan emphasized, “I wrote this song months ago. I posted this song three months ago as a snippet.” He added, “This shows you how divisive a narrative can be when shoved down our throats through social media,” before affirming his love for the country.
Bryan elaborated, stating that the song actually reflects his deep affection for the nation and its people. He encouraged listeners to understand the context of the entire piece, suggesting that it resonates across the political spectrum.
“Everyone using this now as a weapon is only proving how devastatingly divided we all are. We need to find our way back,” he remarked.
Continuing, he expressed his identity not as a politician but as “a 29-year-old man who is just as confused as everyone else.” He mentioned, “I served this country, I love this country, and the song is about all of us coming out of this divided space.”
Reflecting on the reaction, he admitted, “To see how much shit it stirred up makes me not only embarrassed but kind of scared.” He reiterated the need for unity, saying, “Left wing or right wing we’re all one bird and American.”
Bryan clarified that he doesn’t align himself with extreme views, understanding both sides may feel let down. “To all those disappointed in me on either side of whatever you believe in just know I’m trying my best too and we all say things that are misconstrued sometimes,” he stated.
He shared that the scrutiny from fans and critics has been overwhelming. “The last few months of my life I’ve been scrutinized by more people than I ever thought possible,” he reflected. “It’s been hard to see where my bearings even are anymore. Been falling off a cliff while trying to grow wings at the same time.”
The song features poignant lyrics, touching on themes of disillusionment and fear, with lines like, “My friends are all degenerates, but they’re all I got…” and “And ICE is gonna come bust down your door, try to build a house no one builds no more.” These lines, shared in a snippet on Instagram, showcase the song’s complex emotional landscape.
