Zelenskiy Sees Hope in Trump’s Peace Efforts
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy expressed optimism on Saturday regarding President Trump’s efforts to negotiate a peace agreement between Israel and Hamas, suggesting that this might pave the way for an end to the ongoing conflict in Eastern Europe.
He mentioned, “If we can stop wars in one region, we can certainly stop other wars, including the Russian war,” in a post that congratulated Trump on social platform X.
Key figures in the negotiation process, such as Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner, collaborated with officials from Qatar and Egypt to solidify the peace deal, with Trump anticipated to join the negotiating team early next week to facilitate the release of hostages and a temporary halt to hostilities in Gaza.
The agreement between Israel and Hamas, which marks the start of a resolution to their two-year conflict, received accolades from global leaders.
Russian President Vladimir Putin acknowledged Trump’s efforts on Friday, stating, “He’s really making a lot of effort to resolve such a complex crisis that has been going on for years, even decades,” during a summit in Dushanbe, Tajikistan.
Recently, President Trump shifted his previous doubts regarding Ukraine’s capabilities on the battlefield, now affirming that Ukraine could regain its original borders despite ongoing assaults from the Kremlin.
Trump stated, “After knowing and fully understanding the military and economic situation in Ukraine and Russia, I think Ukraine is in a position, with the support of the European Union, to fight and restore all of Ukraine to its original state,” a sentiment he shared on Truth Social in late September.
He further added, “With time and patience, financial support from Europe, especially NATO, could very well be an option. Why not?” In the same communication, he described Russia as a “paper tiger” engaging in a “purposeless” war against Ukraine.
Zelenskiy expressed gratitude for Trump’s comments and reiterated that there was little indication of the Kremlin’s desire for peace in the region. He conveyed to Trump about the Russian assault on Ukrainian energy infrastructure and appreciated his willingness to assist.
Moreover, Zelenskiy noted their discussions regarding strategies to enhance Ukraine’s air defenses and emphasized that there were promising ideas in place to strengthen their position.
He concluded by asserting, “The Russian side needs to be prepared to engage in real diplomacy. This can be achieved by force.”
