Ukraine’s Zelensky Expresses Concern Over U.S. Sanctions on Russia
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky voiced his worries on Saturday regarding the potential lifting of more sanctions on Russia by the United States. He remarked that actions taken by President Donald Trump might merely “reward” Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin.
Things escalated on Friday when Trump signed an executive order that waived significant U.S. sanctions targeting Russia’s energy sector.
This decision unfolded against the backdrop of Russia intensifying its military actions in Ukraine during the fifth year of the ongoing conflict, which has resulted in massive loss of life and widespread displacement.
Trump had previously disclosed an agreement with Putin concerning the export of Russian diesel, in return for the easing of sanctions, leading Zelensky to express apprehension about further concessions.
“Sadly, I believe the lifting of sanctions is likely to continue. The ‘diesel deal’ could very well just be the beginning,” Zelensky told reporters.
He added that, while he personally hoped Trump would exert all possible effort to pressure Putin into ending the war, it was clear that minimizing Ukraine’s reactions to Russian aggression or lifting sanctions would not be effective.
On the same day, at least two individuals lost their lives due to Russian airstrikes, according to Ukraine’s reports.
Zelensky pointed out that the U.S. decision came just as Russia launched attacks against 15 vital power generation facilities across Ukraine in what was described as one of the largest assaults on the country’s energy infrastructure.
Among the casualties, one person was killed in the southern city of Kherson, where 22 others were wounded, including two children, while another death occurred in the northeastern city of Sumy.
The Lindsey Graham Act, named after the late U.S. senator, focused on targeting Russia’s energy and defense sectors, alongside sanctions against Putin and the “shadow fleet” of tankers employed by Moscow to bypass Western restrictions.
“It’s crucial for everyone in America to understand the reality of the situation,” Zelensky emphasized on social media.
He mentioned that the Lindsey Graham Act was intended to apply effective pressure on Russia to conclude the war, asserting that it could have had a significant impact and still has the potential to do so.
“A U.S. sanctions detente, which eases pressure on the aggressor, along with financial incentives for Putin, only serves to embolden him to continue his attacks,” he cautioned.
Zelensky remarked that Russia aims to create a “blackout” in Ukraine as winter approaches, seeking to leave millions without electricity and heating. He urged allies to increase pressure on Moscow to halt these actions.
The previous winter had seen many in Ukraine suffering from a lack of heating and electricity amidst freezing conditions.
Meanwhile, the Kremlin and Putin have yet to respond to Trump’s measures, but various Russian officials greeted the decision as a significant victory.
“The Trump administration’s suspension of the Graham Act marks an important and truly historic moment,” noted Kirill Dmitriev, an envoy for Putin, on social media.
