Ukraine Faces Renewed Attacks Amid Peace Talks
On Saturday, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy commented on Russia’s latest assault on Kiev, involving hundreds of drones and numerous missiles, stating it revealed “the true attitude of President Putin and his inner circle.” He made these remarks just ahead of a meeting with President Donald Trump set for Sunday in Florida.
Local authorities reported that one individual died and 27 were injured during an overnight strike in the Ukrainian capital. This tragic event coincided with Zelenskiy’s plans to present a detailed 20-point peace proposal aimed at resolving ongoing hostilities with Russia.
Zelenskiy shared on X that since last night, around 500 drones, many being ‘Shahed’, and about 40 missiles, including the Kinzhal type, targeted Kiev. “The primary focus has been on energy infrastructure and residential areas,” he noted. He also added, “There was a clash resulting in damage to a residential building, and rescuers are currently searching for someone trapped under the debris.”
Reflecting on the situation, Zelenskiy expressed frustration about Russia’s responses to peace proposals from the U.S. and other nations. “While Russian representatives engage in lengthy discussions, in reality, it’s the Kinzhal and ‘Shahed’ that communicate their stance. This shows that they’re not interested in ending the war; rather, they’re looking to inflict more suffering on Ukraine and increase pressure on the rest of the world.” It’s a grim thought, really.
Zelenskiy remarked on the potential devastation if Russia turns the holiday season into a time of destruction. “If they turn Christmas and New Year into a period of devastation, then we must respond with strong measures,” he stated. He emphasized that the United States and Europe, along with numerous partners, have the capability needed to take action ideally before the new year.
Before meeting with Zelenskiy, Trump mentioned his intention to finalize a peace agreement, claiming that “He doesn’t have anything until I approve it. So, let’s see what he has.”
In a separate announcement, Russia’s Ministry of Defense stated that it had carried out wide-ranging attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure supposedly linked to military activities. These efforts were branded as retaliation for Ukrainian actions against Russian civilian targets.
In the midst of this strife, air defense forces in Russia reported intercepting seven Ukrainian drones over the Krasnodar and Adygeya regions early Saturday.
