Zelenskyy gathers European partners in Washington for Trump meeting about the Ukraine conflict

European Leaders to Meet with Zelensky in Washington

This Monday, several European leaders are set to accompany Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to a significant meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington, DC. The gathering highlights a united effort among European nations as the conflict with Russia continues.

On Sunday, key figures including NATO Executive Director Mark Latte, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and Finnish President Alexander Stubb confirmed their participation. Their presence underscores Europe’s commitment to supporting Ukraine amidst ongoing hostilities.

Before heading to Washington, Zelensky met with von der Leyen in Brussels to prioritize discussions at the White House, focusing on long-term military assistance, Ukraine’s aspirations to join the EU, and enhancing transatlantic cooperation against Russian aggression.

At a press conference, von der Leyen expressed her enthusiasm about joining Zelensky and other European leaders in the upcoming meeting. She reiterated the EU’s commitment, stating, “We will continue to support you as long as it is necessary,” and mentioned plans for a trilateral meeting involving Ukraine, Russia, and the U.S.

She also issued a warning that if the Kremlin doesn’t halt its offensive, the EU would proceed with a new sanctions package against Russia next month.

Zelensky expressed hope for a “productive” meeting with Trump, contrasting it with the tensions of his previous visit in February, which had been somewhat chaotic.

This meeting follows Trump’s summit with Russian leader Vladimir Putin, where Trump indicated that the Russian leadership might be open to ending the conflict in exchange for significant territorial concessions from Ukraine. Trump suggested that Kiev should negotiate with Moscow as Russia is a formidable force.

However, Zelensky and the European leaders have remained firm in their stance against conceding Ukrainian territories to Russia. Addressing reporters after the Brussels meeting, Zelensky stated, “The territorial issue is so important that it should only be discussed by the leaders of Russia and the Ukrainian leaders,” while noting that there have been no signs from Russia indicating a willingness to engage in a trilateral dialogue.
