Ukrainian President Supports Trump’s Peace Efforts
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky commended former President Donald Trump for his attempts to mediate peace and pursue direct discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Zelensky stated, “We are behind Trump’s initiatives to halt Russia’s war, to stop violence, and to secure a just and enduring peace. We appreciate global support for peace and help in safeguarding our lives,” he shared in a post on X.
“It’s clear who makes the decisions in Russia regarding the war’s conclusion. The world knows this. Ukraine seeks more than just statements from leaders—we need action,” he added. The U.S. has proposed this approach, which Ukraine supports.
An analyst suggested that this could be Putin’s final opportunity for a beneficial ceasefire agreement, coinciding with Trump’s announcement of relocating two nuclear submarines due to aggressive remarks from former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.
In response to these provocative statements, Trump ordered the submarines to be strategically positioned. He remarked, “These inflammatory comments necessitated a strong military precaution.” Zelensky’s comments followed U.S. Representative John Kelly’s announcement at a UN Security Council briefing, emphasizing a looming deadline for peace.
Trump has expressed a consistent desire to end the war and indicated strong disapproval of Russia’s actions. He stressed that both countries must agree to a ceasefire and durable peace, aiming for a deal by August 8th. Kelly reiterated U.S. commitment to Ukrainian rights in the face of ongoing aggression.
Kelly pointed out significant differences in the support provided to Ukraine as opposed to what is given to Russia, emphasizing the need for all UN member states to withdraw support for Russia’s military efforts. He identified North Korea, China, and Iran as nations aiding Russia, pointing out China’s role as a key supplier of military resources.
Amid these developments, Russia appears unlikely to negotiate, having recently conducted a deadly airstrike in Kiev, claiming numerous civilian lives.
Russia’s UN mission claimed their actions were not aimed at destroying Ukrainian culture, asserting that both cultures should be able to coexist peacefully. However, following airstrikes that killed 31 people—among them five children—public mourning ensued in Ukraine.
The strikes included over 300 drones and eight missiles targeting residential areas, leading to significant casualties and injuries, including many children.
