Zohran Mamdani Sticks to Progressive Agenda in Mayoral Race

Zohran Mamdani, the leading candidate for mayor with a socialist platform, has vowed to remain committed to his agenda, even if he wins the general election by a narrow margin.

During an appearance on CNN on Friday night, anchor Abby Phillip pressed Mamdani about how he would lead New York City if he were to win in November with only a third of the electoral support.

“Do you think you’re obliged to fulfill everything you promised if you win under those circumstances?” Phillip asked.

Undeterred, Mamdani responded, “If we win an election, we are required to govern and deliver on our promises. Otherwise, what’s the point of our politics?” The 33-year-old councilor from Queens emphasized the importance of following through on campaign commitments.

He referenced Tim Walz and the concept of political capital, suggesting that it should be utilized to achieve goals. “That’s what I’m aiming for,” Mamdani said. He expressed confidence in his ability to engage more New Yorkers in the political process, pointing to a recent turnout of young voters in June that he considered unprecedented.

Mamdani previously unseated former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic mayoral primary this past June.

Meanwhile, Cuomo is running as an independent alongside Mayor Eric Adams, while Curtis Sliwa is representing the Republican side.

Mamdani has proposed a 2% tax increase on billionaires and a 4.5% increase on business and city-owned grocery stores. This has sparked concern among influential figures in New York.

As one real estate source noted, “They want Cuomo to at least make it a closer race, so Mamdani doesn’t have a clear mandate.”

Speculation about Mamdani’s potential success in November is growing, with even President Trump expressing interest in the race.

Trump, through businessman John Catsimatidis, has set a deadline for two candidates to drop out, indicating he doesn’t want a socialist mayoral victory. Catsimatidis remarked, “He’s concerned about the New York City race and insists that under his watch, ‘That won’t happen.’ He hopes that the most qualified candidate will emerge to challenge Mamdani in the coming days.”
