Zohran Mamdani has won, but lacks a mandate — it is now up to Kathy Hochul and the Democrats to rescue the city.

Zoran Mamdani achieved a notable win in the recent mayoral election, though his support fell short of what is typical for a Democratic candidate. While the final results aren’t in yet, it seems a significant number of New Yorkers may have cast their votes against him.

This isn’t exactly a vote of confidence in the radical ideas he’s promoting. He doesn’t really have the power to push through such extreme policies anyway.

It appears that New Yorkers are aware that his far-left views and pro-crime stance could harm the city, possibly leading to a critical downturn and an irreversible decline.

According to a JL Partners survey mentioned by The Daily Mail, around 2.8 million residents—over a third—would consider voting if Mamdani were to win, with about 765,000 indicating they would “definitely” vote.

This puts pressure on other Democrats, particularly Governor Kathy Hochul, to step in, rein him in, and prevent a potential crisis.

The fact that so many New Yorkers are concerned is another reason to take action.

It’s worth noting that Democrats hold all the cards in Albany. The city of Albany must seek state approval for most of Mamdani’s objectives, even if there is support from the city council.

In fact, states have the power to fully control cities whenever they see fit.

Take Mamdani’s proposal to raise taxes on affluent individuals and corporations, for instance—that really depends on Albany.

The city primarily manages property taxes, and any proposed income tax increases could push wealthy individuals and corporations out, thereby weakening the tax base even further.

This is likely why Hochul campaigned on an “affordability” platform and committed to opposing new taxes.

However, she seems keen to please Mamdani, likely hoping for his backing in the upcoming Democratic primaries.

In return for his support, she might acquiesce to some of his insistences to “tax the rich.”

Mamdani’s ideas regarding education, crime, housing, and transportation could quite possibly make conditions worse for New Yorkers if he gains national support.

Hochul and her colleagues could require him to take responsibility for educational matters, rather than ceding control to the teachers’ union, which often prioritizes its agenda over children’s needs.

They might also safeguard the housing market by overriding his proposals to defund the police and halt his impractical rent freeze.

As for the move to make city buses free, this could diminish the quality of bus services significantly, and subway operations would still remain under governmental oversight.

Sure, some voters were swayed by Mamdani’s lofty promises, but others simply chose him over less appealing options.

It’s now up to Hochul’s team to protect New York from his potentially harmful and deceitful plans.

They can act with the knowledge that a majority of voters would back their efforts.
