The Bronx’s Vanessa Gibson spoke up on Tuesday about the frontrunner for mayor, Zoran Mamdani, who faces challenges as a socialist candidate.
While Gibson was touted as a supporter in Mamdani’s campaign, she was notably absent from events near Yankee Stadium that morning. This, despite the Bronx’s significant Democratic representation in local elections.
Some members of the Democratic Socialists of America referred to scheduling issues as a reason for Gibson’s absence. However, insider sources claim she hasn’t publicly confirmed her support for Mamdani.
One insider remarked, “It’s quite an amateur move.” Another expressed amazement at the apparent disconnect, suggesting this situation reflects a broader dynamic within Democratic candidates’ campaigns.
There was noticeable concern about Gibson’s lack of presence, as typically, she aligns with fellow Bronx officials at such events.
Hours after the confusion regarding her absence, officials from Gibson’s office still hadn’t clarified whether she supports Mamdani’s candidacy. This lack of a clear statement has left many political observers surprised given the timing.
The day prior, Gibson had actively endorsed Mayor Eric Adams during a summer concert series, passionately referencing their friendship and his commitment to the Bronx.
She stated, “He’s a friend of our borough. He’s delivered for us,” emphasizing her support in a public address.
In the context of Mamdani’s campaign, various Bronx political figures, including council members and prominent state Democrats, were seen voicing their approval. Yet, Gibson’s absence raised questions.
In response to queries about her absence, State Senator Jamal Bailey noted that Gibson was unavailable for the morning event. He offered well-wishes for a quick recovery to another prominent figure, Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, who also wasn’t present.
While Heastie hasn’t weighed in on Mamdani’s campaign, he joins others in the political arena who have yet to declare official support.
