DSA Intensifies Stance on Israel
The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), prominently associated with Zohran Mamdani, has adopted a more extreme position. In fact, they’re advocating for an armed struggle against Israel and have threatened to expel members who stray from their hardline directives regarding the Jewish state.
During a national conference held in Chicago last month, the DSA embraced a new resolution aimed at promoting anti-Zionist sentiments within the party.
As a member and a mayoral candidate, Mamdani is likely to experience pressure from the party’s leadership.
Members, including those holding office with DSA backing, now risk expulsion if they question boycotts or sanctions against Israel, or if they engage with groups like AIPAC, which are associated with pro-Israel lobbying.
Per the DSA’s guidelines, even showing support for the right of Israeli self-defense could lead to expulsion.
The resolution has drawn criticism, as it sets a clear internal boundary that emphasizes ideological rigidity and intolerance concerning the Israeli-Palestinian issue. A report from the Contagion Research Institute noted that these developments could significantly influence New York City’s electoral landscape and have implications for how extremist views are perceived in broader U.S. politics.
Mamdani has recently distanced himself from some DSA policies, stating, “My platform is not the same as National DSA.”
One notable supporter of the resolution is Francesca Maria Mavilia, co-chair of the Connecticut DSA and part of the group’s national political committee. Originally from Bologna, Italy, Mavilia has a long history of backing anti-Israel initiatives, including co-founding the Connecticut Palestinian Solidarity Union. She was also a member of Yale’s Students for Justice in Palestine in 2018.
After the recent attack in Israel on October 7, Mavilia made a post expressing that “Europe will fall too,” in response to criticisms of the assault. Currently, she is identified as a graduate researcher at Yale School of Medicine but did not respond to requests for comment about her post.
Ahmed Hussain, also a supporter of the anti-Israel measures, is a member of the DSA’s National Political Committee based in New York. Hussain is described as an immigrant who began his activist career during the Arab Spring uprisings in 2011.
In June, he expressed support for closer ties between DSA and China, making headlines for welcoming a Chinese organization during an event in New York.
Additionally, Hussain has publicly criticized prominent figures like Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, labeling them as enabling Israeli violence against Palestinians. His comments noted that after six years in office, Ocasio-Cortez had strayed from the socialist ideals that initially brought her to prominence, facing backlash from pro-Palestinian activists.
Attempts to reach Hussain have not been successful, and it appears his social media accounts are deactivated.
The biennial DSA conference took place from August 8 to 10, featuring remarks from Rashida Tlaib, who has made headlines for her anti-Israel positions and also helped raise funds for Mamdani’s Super PAC at the event.
Mamdani’s campaign has not commented on these recent developments.
