Tragedy in New Jersey Community

A community in New Jersey is grappling with the tragic loss of two teenage girls in a hit-and-run incident, allegedly involving someone who had been stalking one of them.

Maria Niotis and Isabella Salas, both 17 and best friends, were riding their E-bikes in Cranford on a recent Monday evening when they were struck and killed.

The suspect, a 17-year-old male whose identity hasn’t been fully disclosed, faces two counts of first-degree murder and is currently held in juvenile court.

Court records reveal that he has received at least 15 tickets previously, including charges related to reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident.

Local residents have expressed concern, with one neighbor stating the accused had been stalking Niotis for several months. “He’s been parked outside her house for three months now. He was never stopped,” the neighbor mentioned. Another confirmed both the school and the police had been alerted about the situation.

Interestingly, Westfield Police Chief Christopher Battiloro acknowledged he is related to the suspect and expressed his condemnation of the actions taken. “I demand that he face the consequences of his alleged actions in a court of law,” he stated. His connection to the case intensifies the emotional weight, as he also resides in the same neighborhood where this tragedy occurred.

In a joint statement released by the families of the victims, they suggested that the suspect may have been planning the incident for a considerable amount of time.

Both girls are being remembered fondly by friends and family, characterized as loving and kind individuals.

A wake for Maria is scheduled for Thursday evening, followed by her funeral on Friday morning. Isabella’s wake will take place Saturday morning, with her funeral set for Monday.
