2 Randall’s Island migrant shelter residents arrested for assaulting security guard

Two residents of the chaotic Randalls Island migrant shelter were arrested Monday night on suspicion of assaulting a security guard, police said.

Police say a male resident of the shelter is suspected of punching a security guard in the face at the facility in the 600 block of East 125th Street around 7 p.m.

According to the New York City Police Department, while a police officer responding to a report of an assault was speaking with a security guard, another male resident assaulted the security guard in front of him.

Both were taken into police custody.

A third person believed to have been involved in some way in the altercation was also arrested, police said.

Charges against the trio were still pending Monday night.

The shelter has seen at least two violent clashes between residents and security and police this month.

A violent scuffle broke out on February 15 after several NYPD officers struggled to remove a man from the facility, according to police and dramatic video of the confrontation.

The footage showed the officer sparring with the man in front of a large crowd, with onlookers jumping in, including one who hit the officer in the head with a backpack.

Earlier, on February 4, a drunken immigrant was arrested after fighting with police officers who tried to remove him from the facility. One of the officers was treated at a local hospital after the scuffle.

Violence within evacuation centers also includes fights between residents.

Dafren Canizares, 24, was stabbed to death in the facility’s cafeteria last month. Moises Coronado, 27, allegedly stabbed Cañizares’ fellow asylum seeker on January 6 after an argument over comments he made about his girlfriend.
