Philly Police Officer Shot in High School Brawl
A 30-year-old man has been charged with shooting a 26-year-old police officer during a fight near a Philadelphia high school on Wednesday. The police chief did not hold back in his criticism of the suspect.
Dachan Shii is facing several charges, including aggravated assault on law enforcement, along with reckless endangerment and other related offenses, as stated by Police Chief Kevin Bethel the following day.
“I urge you to keep this officer and his family in your thoughts, as well as all who wear that uniform in service to Philadelphia,” Bethel remarked.
According to reports, multiple fights were happening outside Overbrook High School when additional officers arrived on the scene.
The incident unfolded around 2:40 PM, with mobile phone footage capturing the sound of gunfire. Chief Bethel noted that an adult with a firearm was involved and that the shot fired struck the ground, causing injuries to officers due to ricochet.
The injured officer, who sustained a gunshot wound to the stomach, was rushed to Penn Elders Hospital for surgery. He had graduated from the police academy in 2024 and was reported to be on the mend by Thursday morning.
Mayor Cherell Parker echoed the call for prayers during a press conference, reinforcing their support for law enforcement.
There were a few moments of confusion, as officers did not immediately realize one of their own had been shot, according to the station.
Chief Bethel expressed his frustration with the suspect, asserting, “You’re an adult. You should know better. You should have de-escalated the situation.”
Additionally, reports indicate that a teenager was also taken into custody related to the incident.
Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner emphasized accountability for the suspect’s actions, stating, “We will ensure that justice is served in this ongoing investigation.”
During the confrontation, officers did not discharge their weapons, and fortunately, no other injuries were reported. Notably, this shooting marks the sixth police-involved shooting in Philadelphia this year and the second incident where an officer was injured while on duty.
