Tennessee Man Goes Viral Over Food Stamp Changes
A man from Tennessee has sparked a lot of conversation online with his strong reaction to new food stamp limitations initiated by the Trump administration aimed at reducing fraud.
The new rules target able-bodied individuals aged 18 to 65 who don’t have disabilities and are not working at least 20 hours each week. Notably, these restrictions don’t affect households that have children under 14.
“Honestly, I’m devastated… It’s been a huge help for me. I was relying on $292 a month,” shared Nelson Scott, a 38-year-old with no job, no children, and no disabilities.
While some taxpayers may find relief from the burden of funding these benefits, many recipients like Scott are furious about the changes.
“That’s nonsense,” Scott stated, further expressing how his status as a felon complicates his job search. “You should really consider being more flexible and hire us.” His story was shared widely, racking up nearly 200,000 views on social media. Yet some comments were less sympathetic.
Critics on social media had plenty to say. One user remarked, “Oh no, he actually has to work just like the rest of us!” Another chimed in with, “That guy should really get off the couch and find a job. I’ve been working since I was 12!”
It’s worth noting that the updated SNAP rules do include exceptions. Individuals in treatment for drugs or alcohol, those who are pregnant, and recipients of unemployment benefits can still access their benefits.
Interestingly, work requirements can also be satisfied through participation in job training programs or volunteer roles, offering some alternatives to those affected by the changes.
