A high-rise apartment building under construction collapsed on Monday in South Africa’s coastal city, injuring at least 22 workers and trapping more than 40 people in the rubble, authorities said.
The injured employee was taken to a hospital, but authorities did not immediately provide details of the injury. South African media reported that at least five workers were seriously injured.
According to local media reports, a building believed to be a high-rise apartment building under construction collapsed, leaving at least 59 people trapped under the rubble. According to reports, 10 people were rescued, five of whom were seriously injured.

The building collapsed just after 2 p.m. in the city of George, about 400 miles east of Cape Town on South Africa’s southern coast.

The city of George said in a statement that the city’s disaster management services, ambulances and police were responding to the building collapse. The building was located near City Hall.
It said there were multiple injuries, but did not provide details.
George Municipality spokesperson Ntobeko Mankwenkwe told News24 Media the building appeared to be four or five storeys high.
“At the moment we don’t know the exact number of injuries,” Mankwenkwe said. “Our paramedics and local ambulance services are on scene.”

The Western Cape government said it was closely monitoring the situation and was deploying resources to support municipal authorities in their emergency response.
“All necessary support is being provided to emergency personnel to speed up the response. Authorities are currently concentrating on saving lives. This is our top priority at this stage,” Western Cape said. Prime Minister Alan Winde, Head of Government, said: said in a statement.
Winde said the central government had been briefed.
