Florida Executes 74-Year-Old Inmate, Setting a Record

A 74-year-old man was executed in Florida on Tuesday, marking the oldest inmate executed in the state’s modern history.

Dennis Sochol was declared dead at the Florida State Penitentiary near Stark at 6:16 p.m. He received three lethal injections, according to the Florida Department of Corrections. Sochol had been convicted in January 1982 of first-degree murder and kidnapping after an incident involving 18-year-old Patricia Gifford who refused his advances.

On the same day, the U.S. Supreme Court denied Sochol’s request to stop the execution, without giving any comment, and also turned down his plea for reconsideration.

During the execution, Sochol was secured to a stretcher with an intravenous line in his arm.

A spokesperson for Governor Ron DeSantis mentioned that Sochol expressed remorse, apologizing to Gifford’s family, and thanked loved ones for their support, dedicating his spirit to Jesus Christ.

Reports indicate that Sochol declined a final meal and had minimal visitation, meeting with just one visitor and a spiritual advisor before his execution.

Sochol had met Gifford while she was celebrating New Year’s Day at a bar in Fort Lauderdale, with her brother present. After chatting all night, Gifford left with her brother and Sochol for breakfast. He drove them to a remote location and allegedly asked Gifford for sex. When she refused, he later attacked the brother, according to investigators.

Sochol was arrested in 1986 on separate charges but later confessed to Gifford’s murder and the disposal of her body. His brother had reportedly informed authorities about Sochol’s involvement, noting that Gifford’s body was never recovered.

In 1987, a jury found Sochol guilty and he was sentenced to death.

With Sochol’s execution, he now holds the record for the oldest inmate executed in modern Florida. Interestingly, there’s another 80-year-old inmate scheduled for execution later this month. Last month, another 74-year-old inmate was executed, just a week younger than Sochol.

Sochol’s execution was the 10th in Florida this year. In 2025, the state set a record with 19 executions, surpassing its previous high of eight executions in a single year since the reinstatement of the death penalty in 1976.

Remarkably, Florida led the nation in executions last year, outpacing Alabama, Texas, and South Carolina, which each had five. In total, 47 executions are projected for the United States in 2025.
