The criticism surrounding Chip and Joanna Gaines’ new reality series on the Magnolia Network, “Back to the Frontier,” is shining a light on their extensive lifestyle brand.
Chip faced backlash last weekend after he promoted the show, which focuses on three families living in a pioneer-like manner. The issue? Viewers were unhappy about the inclusion of a same-sex couple among the cast.
Rev. Franklin Graham, who leads Samaritan’s Purse and is part of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, expressed disappointment with the casting choice.
He stated on social media, “We must love people enough to share the truth of God’s Word. His design for marriage is between one man and one woman.”
Chip responded to the critiques on X, urging dialogue, saying, “There’s so much to ask about modern American Christian culture. It’s disheartening when ‘non-believers’ encounter disdain and hostility from modern American Christians.”
Gaines first entered the spotlight back in 2013 with HGTV’s “Fixer Upper.”
After five successful seasons, they opted to leave the show. Subsequently, they joined forces with Discovery+ and launched Magnolia Network in 2022.
Beyond the network, they operate a 5-acre Magnolia market featuring several businesses: a Silos shop, bakery, coffee shop, and a restaurant named Magnolia Table, which is just a short drive away.
The couple also publishes Magnolia Journal and has authored various lifestyle books, including Joanna’s “Homebody” and Chip’s “No Pain, No Gaines.” Additionally, they have a home decor line with Target called Hearth & Hand.
In 2023, they renovated and opened a boutique hotel named Hotel 1928, along with vacation rentals such as Holcrest Estate and Hillcrest Cottage.
Discovery CEO David Zaslav remarked on the influence of Chip and Joanna, stating that their shows significantly impact culture—I guess they offer a kind of hope that people can create meaningful lives with their own efforts.
