Japan believes the China-Russia partnership is the biggest danger since World War II.

Japan’s Security Concerns Amid Global Tensions

According to a recent document from Japan’s Ministry of Defense, the joint military operations by China and Russia, coupled with threats from North Korea, present the most significant challenge to global stability since World War II.

Defense Minister Nakatani emphasized this point in the annual report, stating, “The existing global peace order is being severely tested, and Japan is facing its most complex security situation since the war.” He believes that the international community is entering a new crisis era, facing unprecedented challenges since World War II.

The document highlights that the major threats are centered in the Indo-Pacific region, where Japan is situated, and suggests that these challenges are likely to escalate in the upcoming years.

When asked about Japan’s potential role in the event of a conflict between the U.S. and China over Taiwan, Nakatani described the United States as “an essential pillar of our national security strategy and the foundation for peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific.”

A Pentagon policy director, Elbridge Colby, appreciated the report, calling it a “significant, clear-eyed strategic assessment.”

Japan’s claims coincide with accusations against China, which has recently been criticized for risky maneuvers, such as flying dangerously close to Japanese intelligence operators. Conversely, China accused Japan of invading its airspace and spying.

Over the last three years, the presence of Chinese warships near Japan’s southwestern coast has tripled, particularly in the waters between Taiwan and Japan’s Yonaguni Island. Additionally, Russia is reportedly collaborating with China in military exercises involving both aircraft and naval vessels.

Meanwhile, North Korea’s activities are raising alarms, as it is viewed as an “increasingly serious and imminent threat” to Japan’s security, especially given its missile developments capable of carrying nuclear warheads.

In response to recent comments by U.S. officials, China has accused Japan of exaggerating the situation. Jiang Bin, a spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Defense, stated that Japan is “overstating the Chinese threat” and interfering in internal matters.

As Japan continues to bolster its defense, especially on the southwestern islands with advanced weaponry, including U.S.-made Tomahawk cruise missiles, questions remain about the overall military balance, which appears to be shifting favorably for China over Taiwan.

The report expresses particular concern regarding China’s tactics, referencing “grey zone military operations” — methods that might lead to conflict without formally declaring war. Japan perceives Taiwan’s security as intrinsically linked to its own, as instability in the Taiwan Strait could threaten vital maritime routes.
