Rescue Operation in California Forest
A mother and her young son were found safe after getting lost in a California forest. The incident unfolded on Saturday, July 12, when regular training for the Calaveras County Volunteer Search and Rescue (SAR) team shifted into a real search operation near Spicer Reservoir.
Before 1:30 PM, Calaveras County Dispatch received a report about a 49-year-old woman and her 9-year-old son, who had gone missing during their trip to Camp Wolfeboro. They had left Sacramento the previous day but had gone silent, raising concerns among those who had been in contact with them.
In light of this, authorities quickly sent a deputy to investigate. Fortunately, the SAR team was training in the vicinity and promptly joined in the search.
Helicopter Support for Rescues
The search was aided by a location-sharing app that helped narrow down where the pair might be. Additionally, air support from the California Highway Patrol was soon enlisted.
Progress came when a nearby camper texted 911, reporting a vehicle matching the family’s description seen the day before, which ultimately helped officials focus their search efforts.
Later in the evening, rescuers stumbled upon handwritten notes at a remote intersection, pleading for help from the missing mother.
Important Messages
According to the Caravelas County Sheriff’s Office, images of the notes revealed directions laid out by the mother, requesting assistance. One note read, “Please help. Me and my son are stuck without service and cannot call 911. We’re ahead and on the path to the right. Call 911 for help. Thank you!”
After following these notes, rescuers located the mother and son, but challenges arose due to the dense forest canopy, which blocked standard communication signals.
To overcome this, rescuers resorted to using amateur radio frequencies, known as “Ham radio,” to establish a connection.
Successful Communication
A retired Communications Supervisor from El Dorado County answered the call on the Ham radio, and subsequently contacted the El Dorado 911 center, which relayed the information to Calaveras Dispatch. This efficient communication was crucial in coordinating the rescue.
Ultimately, the rescuers used a recovery device to free the family’s vehicle and safely returned them to the command post, where they were reunited with their anxious family members.
Authorities noted how modern technology can become ineffective in remote areas, indicating that the mother had inadvertently followed a GPS route that led her to a secluded backroad. As darkness fell, they found themselves lost in the forest.
Wise Decisions Amid Adversity
Despite the perilous situation, the mother and son made several smart choices that facilitated their rescue. They left notes at key intersections, used hazard lights at night, and employed basic survival techniques. Notably, the boy used a whistle intermittently to help signal their location.
Officials stressed the importance of notifying someone about one’s plans, as this could significantly aid in launching a timely rescue operation.
