Senate Moves Forward Amid Concerns over Cryptocurrency Legislation
There’s a new hurdle causing delay in the House regarding cryptocurrency legislation.
This week has been labeled “crypto week,” and President Trump is expected to sign the Genius Act, which aims to establish a framework for stablecoins linked to various currencies.
However, time is becoming an issue. Both the Senate and House are overwhelmed by their own successes.
Recently, delays have surfaced, notably with the time it took for the Genius Act to progress through the Senate, which was around four weeks. The House is now preparing for a similar process.
Moreover, last month, the House had to accept the Senate’s version of a significant bill, which hasn’t been easy. Now, they must also address the Senate’s take on the funding cancellation for Public Broadcasting and USAID.
House conservatives are getting frustrated with the constant necessity to go along with Senate proposals, leading them to push back more assertively.
Trump recently reached out to House Republicans, seeking their input on a Fed-related issue, creating a bit of tension in discussions.
In a twist, the crypto bill was initially sidelined to focus on more pressing issues. House Speaker Mike Johnson spoke with the president about this hold-up.
Meanwhile, efforts are underway to collaborate on the Clarity Act, which sets defined parameters for cryptocurrency regulation in the U.S. One suggestion on the table was to include language that prevents federal authorities from providing clarification on the matter, which, according to sources, could be contentious.
Members of the House Financial Services and Agriculture Committees are hopeful this could also tie into defense spending legislation, but there’s uncertainty about whether any clear action will stem from these discussions.
It’s been reported that the deal with the Freedom Caucus might have unraveled after they tried to negotiate through various committee heads.
In light of this, some criticism has been directed at House Whip Tom Emmer, who has been a vocal supporter of the crypto initiatives. Notably, the efforts to gather enough votes for the crypto bill seems to have not come together as anticipated.
Johnson has been depicted as frustrated over these proceedings, and while there’s hope that the issues could find resolution, the House is still expected to move forward quickly with the Genius Act, paving the way for Trump’s signature soon.
