Leavitt Proposes That Trump Might Reject GOP-Led Amnesty Legislation

Trump’s Stance on Immigration Amnesty Bill

On Thursday, White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt stated that President Donald Trump would not support an immigration amnesty bill backed by the GOP if it were to reach his desk.

During a briefing, Reagan Reese, a correspondent, inquired about the administration’s viewpoint on legislation introduced by Representative Maria Salazar, which aims to provide some illegal immigrants with a path to citizenship. Ten Republicans have endorsed this proposal, referred to as the “Dignity Law.” Reese wanted clarity on whether the president would ultimately reject this legislation.

Leavitt responded by outlining the administration’s clear opposition to such proposals, regardless of the support it has from some members of the House GOP.

“As far as I know, neither the White House nor the president has reviewed this law,” she mentioned. “We’ve been concentrating on a significant bill, which represents yet another historic accomplishment for this president. This week’s Genius Law and Rescue Package has captured our attention, but the President has been very explicit.”

Salazar made an appeal directly to Trump via a post on X, stressing his unique skills and political courage to address issues others shy away from. “The Dignity Act is the chance to create a landmark deal for America’s immigration system. This is your moment, and I truly believe you are the leader meant for this,” she wrote.

However, Trump has drawn firm lines on this topic. At a Cabinet meeting on July 8, when questioned about pardoning illegal farm workers, he categorically dismissed the idea.

“There’s no pardon,” Trump stated. “What we’re doing is eliminating criminals, but we’re establishing a work program instead.”
