Senators Question CBS Decision to Cancel Colbert’s Show

Senators Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) are demanding answers regarding the recent cancellation of Stephen Colbert’s late-night show by CBS. They suggested that the decision might have political undertones.

Warren stated, “CBS cancelled Colbert’s show just three days after he called on CBS’s parent company, Paramount, to settle a lawsuit with Trump for $16 million, which gives off some bribery vibes.”

CBS’s Position

CBS announced that the long-running late-night program will conclude in May 2026, attributing the cancellation to financial considerations amidst challenging times in late-night entertainment.

With a merger between CBS and Skydance Media on the horizon, there’s speculation about the future of various late-night shows, including “The Daily Show” on Comedy Central.

Colbert has openly criticized the political climate, referring to the settlement as “a big fat bribe.” He jokingly alluded to potential pressures from CBS executives in his recent broadcasts.

“Some people are saying that the new owners want to please Trump once the merger happens, which might affect how late-night shows operate. It’s a curious situation,” Colbert remarked.

Various journalists have also raised concerns about a “slippery slope” for news networks, especially considering Trump’s legal actions related to his 2024 campaign and CBS’s connections with Paramount amid ongoing lawsuits.

Historical Context

Colbert’s “Late Show,” which started back in 1993 and transferred to him from David Letterman in 2015, became well-known for its liberal stance during the Trump administration. It served as a significant platform for Democratic figures, including recently inviting New York City mayoral candidate Zoran Mamdani.

As of now, attempts to reach Schiff and Warren for comments have been made.
