Trump Urges Return of Former Team Names
Former President Donald Trump has publicly called on the NFL’s Washington Commanders and the MLB’s Cleveland Guardians to revert back to their previous team names in a recent social media post.
Back in 2020, Washington’s owner, Daniel Snyder, changed the team’s name from the Washington Redskins to the Washington Football Team amid rising racial tensions. Later on, the team adopted the name Washington Commanders when Snyder sold the franchise to Josh Harris.
In July 2021, team owner Paul Dolan revealed that the Cleveland Indians would become the Cleveland Guardians, marking a significant shift since the team had been known as the Indians since 1915. Dolan stated that this change stemmed from a “awakening or inspiration” following the death of George Floyd.
Interestingly, there’s still considerable support for the traditional Native American-themed names, especially within the Commanders’ organization. Trump has already conveyed his belief that the Commanders erred in changing the name from the Redskins.
“Washington should, in my opinion, rename its team back to the Redskins. There’s significant appeal in doing so,” Trump expressed on Truth Social. He added, “The Cleveland Indians are among the original baseball teams with a storied history.”
“Fans really want to see this change,” he continued. “Their rich heritage is gradually being stripped away. The climate today isn’t what it used to be a few years ago; we’re passionate and sensible as a nation.”
Harris clarified in an April segment on Fox News Channel that the team has no plans to reclaim the Redskins name, even with discussions of a new stadium in Washington, D.C. He remarked, “The Commanders name carries significant weight in our organization. We’ve got a community that is heavily influenced by military representation, and we’re moving forward with the Commanders name enthusiastically.”
Despite Trump’s remarks, officials within the Guardians team have not suggested they would consider reverting to the old name.
