Continued Dismissal of DOJ Officials by Trump Administration

Changes at the US Department of Justice

Recently, significant reforms have taken place at the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) following changes made during President Donald Trump’s administration.

Reportedly, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondy dismissed former FBI director James Comey from his federal prosecutor position this past week. This news comes amidst reports of an FBI investigation into Comey and former CIA director John Brennan regarding their involvement in allegations of collusion between President Trump and the Russian president.

Additionally, the DOJ has also dismissed immigration court judge Jennifer Payton, who previously oversaw the Chicago immigration court system. According to Justice Connection, which connects graduates of the department focused on protecting their colleagues, over 200 employees have been terminated from the DOJ. These figures include personnel connected to incidents involving shootings at the FBI and those who handled the January 6 cases in Washington, D.C.

Trump has consistently pledged to “drain the swamp” during his anticipated return to the White House, and reports indicated that he has already let go of more than 12 prosecutors involved in cases targeting him.

The article noted that prosecutors associated with Jack Smith, a special adviser to Trump, were at risk of losing their positions because the DOJ could not place trust in them.

In February, Trump’s representatives also fired over 20 immigration attorneys from the DOJ. In February, Biden’s administration reportedly hired a former attorney who served as a migration judge in the nation’s immigration courts. Currently, around 700 judges are operating under Trump’s DOJ, which Bondy leads.

This situation mirrors actions from 2021 when Biden dismissed some lawyers Trump had appointed for immigration court, much like how Obama had let go of some lawyers placed by President George W. Bush.

Meanwhile, the U.S. State Department has seen over 1,300 employees terminated in a restructuring effort aimed at reducing government waste during Trump’s administration.
