Imagine attending your regular ice hockey game, ready to play with friends, only to find two of the top NHL players are also on the ice. Last Wednesday, Conor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, stars from the Edmonton Oilers, surprised local players at Magna Centre in Newmarket, Ontario, for a casual Beer League match. For many there, it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, as they faced off against these hockey legends.
The rink is quite close to where McDavid grew up, and he had his partner on the ice sporting an Oilers jersey. Spectators were in disbelief, watching as McDavid and Draisaitl skated against familiar faces. Interestingly, neither of the NHL stars found the back of the net during this game.
In fact, both players didn’t score at all. There was even a moment captured in a viral clip where another team’s goalie made a fantastic save against McDavid’s shot. It’s noteworthy that while the NHL All-Stars might usually be expected to dominate, they collectively struggled in this instance, losing 6-2 after falling behind 4-0 at the end of the first period. It seems that even elite players have their off nights.
McDavid, reflecting on the experience, recalled playing in similar leagues during his junior hockey days. Last year, he made an appearance in a championship game featuring Quinton Byfield, another prominent player. He mentioned to ESPN that he had been participating in such leagues for more than ten years, noting the surprising growth of interest in these games.
Perhaps after facing frustration following their defeat to the Florida Panthers in the Stanley Cup final, McDavid and Draisaitl were looking for a more relaxed vibe and camaraderie with local players. There’s also the anticipation for the next season, as they hope to reclaim the Western Conference title and ultimately lift the Stanley Cup instead of ending the year empty-handed. Meanwhile, while Draisaitl has secured his future with an eight-year contract, McDavid is set to become an unrestricted free agent after the current season.
