Uvalde CISD Board Votes to Release Shooting Records
After a long, challenging period marked by silence and legal hurdles, the board members of Uvalde CISD have unanimously decided to make public the records related to the tragic mass shooting at Robb Elementary School, which occurred 38 months ago.
This decision follows a ruling by the Fourth Court of Appeals, which supported demands for the disclosure of both school and county documents about the law enforcement’s criticized response during the 2022 shooting that took the lives of 19 children and two teachers.
County Commissioner Ronald Garza urged the board to abandon their appeal and expedite the release of these records, emphasizing the need for accountability during a public forum.
“These attorneys representing UCISD and Uvalde County ultimately work for taxpayers… the longer this continues, the more it will cost the public,” Garza remarked.
About 50 minutes after discussing community feedback, the board reached a unanimous decision. Family members of the victims felt this moment was a considerable step toward healing.
Gloria Cazares, mother of 9-year-old Jackie Cazares, expressed the pain her family has endured, saying, “For over three years, families like mine have lived in silence that feels like unbearable pain, unanswered questions, and yet another betrayal.” She emphasized the need for truth, connecting it directly to her daughter’s memory and the memories of her classmates and teachers.
Erica Munoz, another attendee, stressed the importance of rebuilding trust through transparency. Berinda Adeola also highlighted that releasing the records could initiate healing, stating, “There’s nothing on the record that can hurt us more than the pain we’ve already endured.”
The Uvalde CISD board collectively apologized for their inaction in the past, acknowledging the need for systemic changes moving forward. This need for accountability resonates deeply with the families affected, as they seek answers and justice after a heart-wrenching tragedy. The meeting served as a crucial reminder of the ongoing journey toward healing for the Uvalde community.
