Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida chuckled at viewers while addressing some unusual grievances coming from detainees at a federal detention facility.
During a press conference in Fort Lauderdale, he was alongside newly appointed Chief Financial Officer Blaze Ingoglia.
While discussing state finances, a reporter inquired about the rights of detainees at an Immigration Customs Enforcement center, colloquially referred to as Alligator Alcatraz, located in O’Copy, Florida. DeSantis later mentioned that he had received some rather bizarre complaints from illegal immigrants housed there.
“Did they at least cut off the crust?” he added, emphasizing the ludicrous nature of some of the complaints.
The reporter pointed out that lawyers were unable to meet with their clients at the facility, prompting a question regarding DeSantis’ own experience as the Navy’s legal counsel.
The governor expressed frustration, stating he had been inundated with complaints from “criminal aliens” and suggested that these were being reported without due verification. He noted that while some detainees claimed they weren’t being well-fed, it turns out they were being provided with the same meals as staff.
“But do you really think prisoners are served the same meals as security guards in Florida? That’s not true—everyone gets the same,” he asserted.
He recounted a particularly odd complaint from detainees: “They were upset that their ham sandwiches weren’t toasted. Seriously? Give me a break.”
The audience reacted with laughter, sharing their bemusement at the complaints being aired. One viewer commented on social media, asking if at least the crusts were being cut off for the detainees, while another called it “ridiculous” for them to be complaining at all.
Interestingly, one viewer empathized with the complaints, recalling similar issues raised by residents in a New York City immigration shelter regarding food quality.
In another related matter, some immigrants at a hotel in New York City had voiced concerns about the quality of food, highlighting poor selections for children and uneaten rotten items. Mayor Eric Adams responded that while different cultures have distinct preferences, the city could only offer nutritionally adequate food to everyone.
By the end of 2023, reports indicated that over 70,000 meals prepared for immigrants in the city were classified as wasteful, leading to a daily cost to taxpayers of around $39,000.
