Adams Comments on Immigration Policy

During a recent conversation with New York Post columnist Miranda Devine, Mayor Eric Adams of New York City expressed his perspective on the immigration policies from the Trump era. He noted that efforts to secure borders during that administration have provided what he termed “real relief” for the city.

Adams specifically praised the Trump administration’s actions aimed at curbing the influx of asylum seekers into New York City. He pointed out that, compared to previous years, there are now fewer than 100 asylum seekers arriving weekly. “This is because we secure the border,” he said, emphasizing that without those measures, the city would be overwhelmed with newcomers.

He did not shy away from discussing financial implications, mentioning the estimated $7.7 billion spent on housing and services for undocumented immigrants over recent years. Adams lamented the long-term consequences of this spending, suggesting that these lost funds could have been redirected to other city services.

When Devine asked if he believed the Biden administration’s policies created “friction” between him and the federal government, Adams hinted that his criticisms might have led to his federal indictments on bribery and fraud charges. “What unfolded during the investigation made me realize a connection,” he shared, recalling how an FBI presence at a fundraiser marked the beginning of scrutiny he had faced.

He conveyed a strong sense of being targeted, echoing Trump’s sentiments that Biden’s Justice Department is overly politicized. Adams remarked, “That’s the level of law we’re experiencing,” and criticized the current administration for what he views as a bias against him and others.

In April, a federal judge dismissed the corruption charges that had been leveled against Adams, which he felt reflected broader systemic issues within the Justice Department.
