Migrant workers occupy a block in NYC using e-bikes for food delivery and night security, locals express surprise.

Residents of New York City expressed surprise as a block was taken over by delivery e-bikes, predominantly operated by immigrant workers.

According to reports, the surge in e-bikes began modestly but quickly escalated, resulting in migrants hiring security to watch over the bicycles during the night.

One local, Dave L., shared, “I was taken aback. It was as if someone said it, and then everyone just gathered.”

Delivering food through gig jobs is notably popular among undocumented immigrants since it allows them to bypass certain app verification processes.

Sources indicated that the number of e-bikes in the East Village increased to 50 almost overnight, with a makeshift lot situated on 11th Avenue, near schools and playgrounds in the Lower East Side.

Andre, a Mongolian immigrant, mentioned that there are numerous job opportunities in East Village compared to other areas like the Bronx, saying, “That’s why I’m here to work.”

When asked about theft concerns regarding his bike, he confidently replied, “Everyone respects each other.”

Interestingly, some residents voiced indifference towards the e-bike lot. As Margaret stated, “It doesn’t bother me any more than a car would.”

In contrast, residents in San Diego reacted more negatively when immigrants filled local brick-and-mortar stores with food carts, leading to confrontations between restaurant workers and vendors.
