DHS Reports Surge in Detainee Requests in NYC

President Donald Trump’s Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has reported a significant rise in requests for detaining illegal immigrants in New York City’s sanctuary policies.

On Wednesday, DHS announced that since January 20th, Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) has issued 6,025 requests for detainees related to illegal aliens in New York City. This means local law enforcement is required to hold these individuals until they can be transferred to ICE.

To give some context, during former President Joe Biden’s four-year term, ICE issued less than 9,500 detainee requests for New York City.

Interestingly, despite the substantial increase, New York City officials have only acknowledged a few of these cases, according to DHS.

“In just six months, ICE has issued over 6,000 detainees in NYC alone, which is more than a 400% increase compared to the number under Biden,” stated Tricia McLaughlin from DHS.

“When sanctuary city politicians like Mayor Eric Adams overlook ICE detainees, they prioritize illegal immigrants over American citizens. These individuals are dangerous criminals with serious charges like rape, murder, and drug trafficking. Rather than keeping them for ICE, sanctuary policies release them back into communities, which can have deadly repercussions.”

McLaughlin also highlighted two illegal immigrants accused of attempting to harm off-duty border agents after being released into the U.S. and protected from ICE due to New York City’s sanctuary policies.

Earlier this year, during a hearing with the House Judicial Immigration Subcommittee, RJ Hauman, President of the National Enforcement Centre, noted that approximately 25,000 criminal illegal aliens are shielded from federal immigration enforcement due to sanctuary jurisdictions from October 2022 to February 2025.

“The American people were clear in November. Congress needs to respond quickly, adopt Trump’s measures, and take decisive action. We need to end sanctuary cities and initiate widespread deportation immediately,” Hauman urged during the subcommittee meeting.
