Is tequila the healthiest type of alcohol? An expert discusses the truth and misconceptions.

As summer heat drives many Americans to grab a refreshing drink after work, some might reach for something like tequila instead of beer or cider to dodge extra calories. There are others, of course, who steer clear of red wine due to tannins that can lead to hangovers. Personally, I find tequila to be a delightful option—especially on National Tequila Day, which is coming up soon.

Tequila, often highlighted for its role in classic cocktails like Margaritas and Tequila Sunrises, is sometimes viewed as a healthier alternative. But how true is that? According to South Carolina registered dietitian Lauren Moneyker, there are both myths and truths surrounding tequila and its health effects.

Moneyker pointed out that pure tequila, made solely from 100% agave, might be considered a reasonable choice for those focused on health. She noted, “Hangovers depend not only on the type of alcohol but also on how much you drink, how well you hydrate, and what you mix it with.” She explained that tequila is naturally low in sugar and lacks additives, which can make it easier on the body than sugary cocktails or heavily processed spirits.

However, it’s essential to remember that, contrary to popular belief, tequila isn’t a hangover-proof alcohol. “There’s no alcohol that really ‘tolerates’ a hangover,” Moneyker emphasized. The reality is that hangover severity is tied to drinking habits and hydration levels.

Another important point she made is that all alcohol is classified as a group one carcinogen by international cancer research bodies. This designation places it in the same category as substances like tobacco—not because their risks are equal, but due to substantial evidence linking alcohol, especially in significant quantities, to an increased cancer risk.

So, while tequila can be a fun choice for many, it’s important to keep the larger picture in mind. Here are some practical tips for enjoying National Tequila Day responsibly.

Health-Conscious Sipping Tips

Moderation is Key: Stick to recommended limits—typically one drink per day for men and up to one drink every two days for women. Overindulging is where problems often begin.

Be Mindful of Mixers: Opt for simpler mixers like soda water, fresh lime, or grapefruit juice instead of sugary options like margarita mix.

Don’t Drink on an Empty Stomach: Having food before drinking is crucial. A meal with protein, healthy fats, and carbohydrates can slow the absorption of alcohol.

Stay Hydrated: Since alcohol can dehydrate you, aim to drink plenty of water—one glass for every alcoholic beverage you consume usually works well.

Ultimately, the best way to avoid a hangover? It’s pretty straightforward: drink less or choose not to drink at all.
