Early Thursday morning, as talks in Turkey for a ceasefire fell short yet again, both Russia and Ukraine appeared to be moving towards the Black Sea resort city. Reports from Ukrainian media, particularly The Kyiv Independent, suggested that Ukrainian drone strikes targeted Sochi, a prime resort city in Russia. The attack also hit an oil depot in the Krasnodar Krai region, although the damage’s extent was not immediately clear.
While the specifics of what Ukraine aimed to hit in Sochi remain uncertain, it’s worth noting that this city is a prominent holiday destination in Russia and features a Soviet-era palace often used by Kremlin officials. It’s been a source of concern for President Putin, especially during the ongoing Covid pandemic.
On the flip side, Russian forces struck the Ukrainian port city of Odessa, a location that has faced repeated attacks throughout the three-year conflict. This latest strike occurred in the early hours, with Ukrainian emergency services describing the night as “another hellish night” due to damage to a nine-storey residential building. Reports indicate residents from the fifth to eighth floors have lost their homes, and there are fears of structural collapse.
Emergency teams managed to rescue 38 individuals, including five who were trapped. At least four injuries were reported due to the overnight strike, while fires raged in various parts of the city.
The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense explained that the attack on Odessa caused significant damage, particularly to the iconic Privoz market, calling it “totally pointless” as it lacked any military objective. They emphasized the necessity for strengthened air defenses to protect civilians from these kinds of strikes.
Amid these developments, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky remarked on Thursday that numerous civilians, including children, were hurt from a Russian glide bomb attack in Kharkiv. He reiterated that such actions by Russia seem only designed to perpetuate violence, not achieve any strategic goals. Hence, the call for enhanced defense support continues to grow.
This week, Defense Minister Dennis Schmichal met with NATO leaders to discuss aid and enhancing defensive capabilities, while a ceasefire dialogue between Moscow and Kyiv in Istanbul resulted in no tangible outcomes, although discussions on potential prisoner exchanges continued.
Frustrated by the ongoing hostilities despite efforts for a ceasefire, Zelensky shared on social media that proposals for an immediate ceasefire, reiterated during the Istanbul meeting, were dismissed by Russia.
Responding to Ukraine’s actions, Russian drone strikes targeted various sites, including residential buildings in Odesa, apartment complexes in Cherkassy, and energy infrastructure in Kharkov, deploying over a hundred attack drones along with several missiles.
Last week, President Trump had engaged Putin in talks about a ceasefire within days, but there are concerns that sanctions alone won’t deter his apparent war aims.
