Ocasio-Cortez’s Met Gala Gifts Under Scrutiny

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has come under the spotlight for accepting gifts exceeding $3,700 related to her appearance at the 2021 Met Gala. This included rentals for high-end attire and accessories.

The House Ethics Committee attributed this oversight to members of the “squad” from the Bronx and Queens, who failed to adhere to gift regulations. While they acknowledged issues with improper arrangements, they opted against further sanctions.

The total value for the rental of designer dresses, shoes, jewelry, and other items, created by Aurora James, amounted to $3,724.04.

Interestingly, Ocasio-Cortez’s campaign was noted for being delayed in payments to some vendors, accumulating over $990.76 in unpaid bills, as revealed by the committee.

A 26-page report highlighted that most payments were made only after repeated collection efforts and threats of legal action, or following reviews by the Office of Congressional Conduct.

Given this situation, the committee concluded that Ocasio-Cortez’s actions were not in line with the House rules.

In response, her Chief of Staff, Mike Kasca, stated that they have worked to align with House rules and have been conscious of ethical obligations as lawmakers.
