House Ethics Panel Ruling on Ocasio-Cortez’s Met Gala Attendance

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a democratic socialist from New York, is being asked to pay more after accepting complimentary tickets and gifts for attending the Met Gala, according to an ethics committee ruling.

In 2021, she attracted significant attention for her dress, which boldly declared “Tax the Rich,” at the prestigious event hosted at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

On Friday, the panel released a 31-page report addressing the gala-related ethics accusations. They concluded that Ocasio-Cortez, while attempting to comply with gift regulations, “unacceptably” accepted free admission to the 2021 Met Gala for her partner. She also failed to pay the full market value for some items she wore during the evening.

Tickets granted to her and her boyfriend were valued at approximately $35,000 as guests of Vogue. Although Ocasio-Cortez tried to rectify this by working with her lawyer to cover the gift’s cost, the panel noted that her payment was delayed and did not match the gift’s value.

Her chief of staff stated that Ocasio-Cortez accepts the committee’s decision.

Mike Kasca commented, “The House members recognize the committee’s efforts to ensure adherence to house rules while trying to act in line with ethical standards as a member of the house. She accepts the verdict and will address the remaining amount, consistent with every step in this process.”

Interestingly, her gala appearance sparked a mix of ridicule and debate regarding the tax contribution of wealthy individuals. Bill Maher reflected on this sentiment by saying, “I’m all for reducing income inequality, but let’s be honest—the rich do pay substantial taxes.” He further noted, “It’s just that saying ‘tax the rich’ can give an impression that they don’t pay much at all, which isn’t accurate.”
