Trump’s Remarks on Ceasefire Deadline in Ukraine
On Monday, President Donald Trump informed journalists that he believes Russian President Vladimir Putin will drastically shorten the timeframe for agreeing to a ceasefire in Ukraine. Trump mentioned that Putin’s deadline, originally set at 50 days, could be trimmed down to “10 or 12 days” during a discussion with British Prime Minister Kier Starmer.
If Putin fails to sign the ceasefire agreement, Trump warned of severe secondary tariffs and sanctions targeting key Russian industries. “Starting today, we have a new deadline of either the 10th or 12th,” he stated. He expressed confusion over the extended waiting period, suggesting that, while he wants to be understanding, he is uncertain about the lack of progress.
Additionally, the council is pursuing a bipartisan bill that empowers Trump to impose a staggering 500% tariff on Russia’s uranium, gas, and oil in response to ongoing tensions.
In light of recent developments, Trump has criticized Putin for delaying peace discussions while continuing military actions. The situation remains tense, with ongoing exchanges of drones and missiles, and Trump also took steps to facilitate the transport of weapons to Ukraine through NATO as of July 11, aiming to push for peace.
“There’s too much loss of life; it’s a brutal conflict,” Trump remarked. “One would think he’d want to reach an agreement based on logic, but time will tell.”
The State Department did not provide immediate comments when contacted by reporters.
