On Tuesday night, Lewis Gill faces one last challenge, but it seems the Yankees are preparing to pencil him back into the schedule.
This year’s Rookie of the Year is set to make his debut with the Marlins on Sunday, as stated by coach Aaron Boone during his weekly update, provided Gill completes his final rehab assignment with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Tuesday.
The right-handed pitcher is expected to throw around 75 pitches after recovering from a significant strain incurred during spring training, having previously thrown 67 pitches in his last outing.
Given the current rotation setup, Gill has effectively bought Max Fried an extra day to prepare for his next start, which will be against the Rangers on Monday, as he starts on Sunday in Miami.
The Yankees hope to leverage a healthy Gill during the final two months of the season, strengthening the rotation alongside Fried and Carlos Rodon.
In other updates, Clark Schmidt was showing promise before undergoing Tommy John surgery earlier this month.
Will Warren has started every game this season, but his performance has been inconsistent, and he is nearing his career high for innings pitched.
Marcus Stroman returned after missing two and a half months due to a knee injury but struggled upon his comeback.
Ryan Yarbrough had been unexpectedly effective as a swingman since joining the rotation in May, though he’s currently sidelined with a strain.
Cam Schlitler has already shown flashes of his potential through three starts in the big leagues, but he still has work to do back in Triple-A.
This situation allows GM Brian Cashman to consider adding another starter ahead of Thursday’s trade deadline, even with Gill’s impending return.
