Condemnation of Attack on Christian Villages in West Bank
Leaders of the Christian Church in Jerusalem have spoken out against a recent attack on Christian communities in the West Bank. The statement was issued on Tuesday by the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Pierbattista Cardinal Pizzaballa.
The Patriarch, who represents various Christian denominations in Jerusalem, expressed “deep concerns and unwavering condemnation” regarding the incident in the village of Teibe. Reports indicate that a group of attackers, described as settlers, harassed residents, with vehicles reportedly coming alarmingly close to the village church.
“It’s regrettable that the Israeli police’s statement focused only on property damage,” the church leaders noted. “This perspective ignores the broader context of ongoing threats and abuse. Such omissions distort the truth and fail to address violations of international law, particularly concerning religious freedom and cultural heritage.”
The statement further held the Israeli government accountable for the actions of the attackers, underscoring the need for stronger protections for Christians living in the region.
Cardinal Pizzaballa has previously advocated for Christian rights in areas like the Gaza Strip and has condemned attacks by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). In a noted incident, an airstrike on the Holy Family Catholic Church resulted in multiple casualties, which the IDF claimed was accidental.
“We are deeply troubled by a climate of immunity that erodes the rule of law and threatens peaceful coexistence,” the statement concluded. “The absence of accountability not only endangers the Christian community but also undermines the moral foundations necessary for peace and justice for everyone involved.”
The Israeli Foreign Ministry has not yet responded to requests for comments following this incident.
