Father of Fallen NY Police Officer Suffered Stroke After Hearing About Son's Death

Father of Murdered NYPD Officer Suffers Stroke

The father of Didalur Islam, a slain New York police officer, reportedly had a stroke upon hearing the tragic news of his son’s death on Monday, as shared by relatives with the New York Post.

His cousin, Muhammad Mashur Islam, mentioned that the news caused a severe health episode for the father, who has yet to be discharged from the hospital. “He went to see him last night. When he received the message, he felt unwell and subsequently suffered a stroke,” explained Mashur Islam.

Didalur Islam represented the best in our department. When his life was tragically cut short today, he was in the act of protecting New Yorkers. We stand together in prayer during this period of unimaginable grief and will honor his legacy forever.

The officer’s cousin added that the entire family is devastated by the loss, including his wife. “They are all crying. He had no brothers — he was the only one. It’s a significant blow for the family,” he described. “His wife had a doctor’s appointment, and I heard that one officer from the precinct took her to the hospital.”

Didalur, an immigrant from Bangladesh, had been with the police force for three and a half years, assigned to District 47. He was on duty, wearing his uniform and a bulletproof vest, when he was shot by Shane Tamura outside a building on Park Avenue. He leaves behind a pregnant wife and two young children.

Tamura, 27, allegedly moved from Las Vegas to New York and seemed to target the NFL headquarters housed in the building. Following the shooting, he was found to have left a note mentioning the NFL and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

There’s no clear evidence linking Tamura to the NFL, and while he played soccer in high school, there’s nothing suggesting he suffers from CTE, despite mentioning it in his note.

In total, four individuals lost their lives before the gunman turned his weapon.
